PICKLEX® 20 - Priming and Painting Process
For Priming, Painting, Powder Coating
Type of metals:
|
Steel (cold rolled & hot rolled), Aluminum, Galvanized steel, Stainless steel (any
ferrous & non-ferrous metal)
|
Application:
|
Completely prepare the metal surface by removing surface rust, mill oil, etc. for priming, painting or powder coating
|
Traditional Process Vs Picklex® 20 Process
Traditional Method:
a) Blast or Sand the new metal surface (cold rolled steel, aluminum, galvanized steel, stainless steel)
b) Prime
c) Paint
Note: There is no conversion coating in the market which can be applied manually at room temperature
without rinsing (note: conversion coating provides better bonding & longer corrosion resistance).
Quality Problems:
a) After blasting or sanding, the metal surface starts rusting immediately which affects adhesion with
the top coating
b) Since there is no pre-treatment/conversion coating, so the overall adhesion is usually very poor
(especially the bonding on edges, corners, & the welding area usually fail) and also the corrosion
resistance (paint life) is much less.

Picklex® 20 Process:
Picklex® 20 is a US EPA Tested/Verified, Award winning, water based “Value Added Green Product”. It
is ready to use and can be applied by brushing, spraying, dipping, wiping etc. Picklex® 20 works on all types
of metal surface, ferrous & non-ferrous.
Process: (Do not put too much product on the metal surface to avoid having residue)
Note: New cold rolled steel, aluminum, galvanized steel, stainless steel does not have to be
blasted or sanded. Any surface rust with hard crust should be wire-brushed to remove loose
rust.
- Just spray and/or brush Picklex® 20 on the metal surface. For large metal surface, spray Picklex® 20 as a Mist. For dipping process, remove oil from the surface and dry before dipping in Picklex® 20
- In about a minute or two, wipe off or blow off with an air hose to remove the excess Picklex® 20 completely from the metal surface to avoid having any residue. Do not leave the product any longer on the metal surface because it might be hard to remove the excess completely.
- Air dry (allow enough time)
|
Priming, Painting or Powder Coating can be performed directly on the coating after complete drying without
sanding (even the coating is smooth).
Note: Do not use Self Etching primer, because Picklex® 20 is a conversion coating and is not compatible
with Self Etching primer. Sometimes a brownish color can be noticed, which is a part of the coating. Do not
Wash. Also, any dis-coloration on the surface may be due to complete rust conversion.
Performance/Benefits of Picklex® 20:
NOTE: Picklex® 20 is the only conversion coating in the market, which can be applied on the metal
surface at room temperature without rinsing. The coating becomes a part of the metal surface with
almost zero thickness and provides excellent adhesion and longer corrosion resistance (Paint life).
The paint life increases more than two to three times compared with the same paint job performed over
a blasted metal surface.
a) Since Picklex® 20 is a conversion coating, it eliminates blasting or sanding of new metal
surface, saving a lot of labor, time & cost
b) Picklex® 20 will completely remove the mill oil/cutting fluid and flash rust/white rust, provide a
pre-treatment/conversion coating, seal the coating, stop the oxidation process and
completely prepares the metal surface for finishing, all in one step.

c) Prepares the metal surface rust/contamination free with zero oxidation (stops the oxidation
process)
d) Provides long term indoor rust protection and therefore there is no need to rush for
priming/painting
e) The coating does not have to be blasted or sanded for applying the primer or paint
f) Provides excellent bonding (even on the edges and on welding area)
g) Provides lot longer corrosion resistance (paint life) compared to the same paint job performed
over a blasted surface
h) Since Picklex® 20 completely eliminates the rusting problem, there has been zero adhesion
(bonding) failure since 1998 (no re-work, saving a lot of labor, time & cost)
Since Picklex® 20 is a “Value Added Product” and eliminates a lot of traditional steps, the cost of
the product does not even come into picture, the savings of labor, time & cost is lot more than the
product cost. The unit product cost comes out to be in few cents per sq. ft. of surface area and
couple of minutes of labor time (Picklex® 20 covers around 1600 sq. ft. per gallon and only one very
thin coating is needed).
NOTE: For Steel building or any steel structure made of hot rolled steel and is inside a facility
(not directly exposed to the outside weather), Picklex® 20 can be applied right on the mill scale which
will get converted to a conversion coating (without removing the mill scale) and just painting can be
performed over the converted mill scale without a primer (primer can also be eliminated for indoor
applications for any metal surface). This will still provide good bonding and years of paint life.
