PICKLEX® 20 - Welding (when performed per AWS specification)
Traditional Process Vs Picklex® 20 Process
Traditional Welding Method:
If the surface has heavy oil, soil etc., de-grease and dry the surface first before welding.
- Clean the surface to remove all contamination such as mill oil, surface rust.
- Preheat or Interpass Temperature Control
- Weld
- Remove weld scale
- Clean weld spatter
- Check for cracks
Quality Problems:
a) Weld starts rusting quick (even if it is blasted or sanded later on) which affects adhesion
(bonding) with top coating
b) AWS spec requires all weld to be tested (NDT) for failure (crack inside), which happens
because of hydrogen embrittlement. All failures require re-work.
c) A limited number of re-welds can be done due to the hardness values around the joint tend to go outside the specification.

Picklex® 20 Process:
If the surface has heavy oil, soil etc., de-grease and dry the surface first before applying
Picklex® 20.
- Just spray and/or brush Picklex® 20 on the metal surface.
- In about a minute, wipe off to remove the excess Picklex® 20 from the metal surface.
- Heat dry by a heat gun or air dry & perform Welding
To provide maximum rust protection and also provide good bonding with the top coating remove the weld scale by a wire-brush and spray the welding area with Picklex® 20 .
Benefits:
a) Picklex® 20 will not cause hydrogen embrittlement which creates cracks in the weld.
b) Picklex® 20 works on all types of metal surface, ferrous & non-ferrous.
c) Picklex® 20 coating can withstand over 2000°F)

Performance and Benefits of Picklex® 20:
- Completely prepares the metal surface by removing mill oil, cutting fluid, flash rust and applies a conversion coating which allows welding to be performed through the coating.
- Increases weld strength considerably on steel
- Does not cause hydrogen embrittlement and so the chances of weld failure is almost zero, which means almost no re-work.
- There has been zero welding failure since 1998 (no re-work, saving a lot of labor, time & cost)
- Acts as an anti-spatter saving labor & time
- Spraying Picklex® 20 on the welding area provides a very long-term indoor rust protection
- Provides much better adhesion of the welding area with the top coating
